Hundreds of dead gizzard shad are lining the banks of the Fox River near South Olde Oneida Street in Appleton. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources believes algae build up, possibly in Little Lake Butte des Morts, reduced oxygen levels in the water causing the fish to die.

Game fish often feed on gizzard shad. DNR experts say it's not unusual to see a die-off this time of year, but it's more typical to happen later in winter under the ice.
