Taxpayers in Freedom are deciding on a $66.7 million school referendum Tuesday that would build a new high school and renovate the middle and elementary schools.

Overcrowding has become a problem in the district, and both learning spaces and security need to be updated, school leaders said.

If the referendum passes, a secure entrance will be created in both the elementary and middle schools. It would allow visitors to be screened before entering the buildings.

If the referendum passes, the current high school will be converted into the middle school and the grade levels attending each school will change.

Taxpayers in Freedom would initially see a $255 increase on their tax bill for a $100,000 home.

The new and renovated buildings would open in the fall of 2020.
