Drivers will hit the roads this Memorial Day weekend and those planning a trip will likely see lots of orange traffic barrels.

The Wisconsin DOT is pulling crews at noon on Friday. They won't resume work until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

They said they are trying to open as many lanes as possible as there are still many constructions projects to look out for.

AAA projects 39.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home this Memorial Day Weekend. That is 1 million more travelers than last year.

Around 700,000 of those travelers will be on the roads in Wisconsin.

According to the DOT, Friday and Sunday will be the heaviest travel days.

In Northeast Wisconsin, the DOT said the biggest area of concern is I-43.

There is a large project going on in Brown and Manitowoc counties where traffic will be down to one lane through the weekend.

"If you're traveling that this weekend, especially Friday or Sunday, you should anticipate backups, slow-downs and even stopped traffic," said Mark Kantola, the communications manager with the DOT.

Many travelers are still hitting the roads despite higher gas prices.

AAA experts said drivers will pay the highest Memorial Day gas prices since 2015.

The national average is $2.37 for a gallon of regular gas.

In Green Bay, you can find a gallon for slightly lower than that at $2.34.

The DOT reminds drivers to eliminate distractions through work zones.

Keep your head forward and hands on the wheel.

Try and avoid peak travel times if possible.
