Sturgeon spearing kicks off on Saturday and ice conditions look great. The DNR says the ice is about a foot to 17 inches thick, but water clarity isn't the best with visibility at just four to seven feet.

The DNR expects a below average harvest. but area bars, like Payne's Point, are gearing up for a busy weekend.

"It's very stressful, but what's nice about it is some of these people you only see once a year because some come from Milwaukee, Green Bay. You don't see them on a regular basis," said Payne's Point Bar Owner Mike Comins.

Comins says sturgeon spearers come all the way from Europe to try their luck on Lake Winnebago."

The DNR expects the season to run the full sixteen days.
