A woman driving on a Milwaukee highway is dead after she was shot by a child in the back seat. Police say the child got a hold of a gun and fired it.

The mid-morning commute turned into a tragic drive home for Brandon Glass. He was going north on Wis. highway 175 when he realized something terrible must have happened in the other direction.

"I saw a blue sedan that had its door open and it was stopped in the middle of the freeway. And I saw a body lying outside of that," says Glass.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office says a child in the back seat got a hold of a gun in the car and fired it. It hit the 26-year-old woman driving, in the back. Glass says people got out of the cars unsure what to do.

"The entire highway was stopped on the other side," Glass says.

Glass said no one knew exactly what happened. Passerbys saw the kids in the back seat of the car and were worried about them.

"Oh no are there kids in there?" Jasmine Williams, who was driving by.

Sheriff's deputies got the children out of the car  safely as first responders tried to do CPR on the woman. She was prnounced dead at the scene. People  say their hearts go out to everyone involved.

"It's sad," says Willie William, who lives nearby.
