A teen is fighting for his life tonight after being rescued from Lake Michigan in Sheboygan. The boy was spending the day with family at the beach when a current took him out into the lake submerging him in the water for up to ten minutes. His condition as of Tuesday evening remains critical as he remains at a Milwaukee hospital.
General King Park on Sheboygan’s south side is a popular destination for people all summer long. The ice cold water and sand beaches draws the crowds. But it's the under tow and rough surf on Lake Michigan that has police reminding everyone today that the lake must be respected.
Police got a call at about 6:30 Monday evening with a report that a teenager was dragged nearly 40 yards away from shore and had gone under. He was swimming with his uncle and both of them struggled with the current.
"His uncle was able to get out of the current but when he turned around he realized his nephew was not with him and had been pulled out further and was struggling in the water," says Lt. Michael Williams of the Sheboygan Police department.
“We just caution people to be aware of the high surf and the tides and the conditions that can cause these problems,” adds Battalion Chief Keith Risse of the Sheboygan Fire Department.
The teenager was given CPR after police dragged him from the water. Battalion Chief Risse adding that the boy did have a pulse when he was taken to a local hospital. But later Monday evening that boy was sent via life flight to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee where he's currently in critical condition.
