An effort is underway in Fond Du Lac to make sure a state trooper's sacrifice is never forgotten. Trooper Trevor Casper who was killed in a shoot-out by a bank robbery suspect back in March of 2015, currently has a memorial in place. The memorial is right next to the sight of where Casper fell during his first solo shift in Fond du Lac.
At that location there is a growing memorial next to the Pick N’ Save off of Johnson Street. But that memorial is about to become more permanent than what is in place now. Over the next two weeks Pick N’ Saves’ stores in Fond du Lac will be excepting one dollar donations for a bench and plaque that plans to be erected prior to the anniversary of the tragic event.
“It was something nice that we were able to partner with the troopers and with the local police department to put something nice out there just for the community," says Pick N’ Save Store Director Matt Sullivan.
“We talk about him all the time. So people are very motivated to help out and do what they can to kind of create a lasting space for people to come and reflect on what happened and to remember him," adds Scott Hlinak of the Wisconsin State Patrol.
The memorial is expected to cost about 15-hundred dollars and you can start donating at either Pick N’ Save location in Fond du Lac starting Saturday through November 26th. Any additional funds raised will be donated to a foundation that helps support families of fallen officers according to Pick N’ Save representatives.
