Green Bay Police rescued a dog in a hot car Thursday afternoon.
Officers were dispatched to the parking lot of Aurora Baycare, 2845 Greenbrier Road, for the report of a dog locked inside a parked vehicle at about 12:14 p.m. Thursday.
Upon arrival, officers located the vehicle not running with all windows rolled up. The dog was panting heavily, was not moving, and appeared in distress. An officer used his police baton and broke a car window rescuing the dog and ultimately saving its life.
Officers used an infrared thermometer that estimated the inside temperature of the vehicle at about 100 degrees. Officers made contact with the dog owner who had forgotten he had brought the dog with him to the hospital. Officers believe the dog was inside the vehicle for more than an hour. Charges are pending against the dog owner.
A Green Bay Police Officer was injured by broken glass while rescuing the dog. The officer was treated at a local hospital and released.
Green Bay Police remind citizens to leave dogs at home and not leave them in vehicles during hot weather. It only takes a matter of minutes during summer heat for a dog to become distressed inside a vehicle.
