Green Bay Police Department K9 Vilac has retired after just over seven years protecting the community.

Vilac, who is 11 years old, served his last shift on September 15, the department said.

He is a dual purpose German Shepherd trained in both patrol work and narcotics detection.

Vilac has worked the patrol night shift since joining the department in April 2010, police said.

"Vilac was deployed countless times through the years resulting in the safe resolution of many incidents," the department wrote in a press release.

The K9 officer has been forced to retire because of medical issues. He will be enjoying retirement with his handler, Officer Rodney Reetz, Green Bay Police said.
