Medical Monday: What's all the buzz about Kybella?

Janelle Klubertanz is a certified plastic surgery nurse with BayCare Clinic. She joined us on Wisconsin Tonight to discuss Kybella.

According to Klubertanz, Kybella is the only FDA-approved injection for destroying fat cells under the chin to improve your facial profile. It reduces the appearance of moderate to severe fat below the chin, a condition commonly known as double chin.

She said it’s suddenly so popular because it allows people to enhance their facial appearance without surgery. Prior to this FDA-approved treatment, people wanting to eliminate a double chin had to undergo liposuction, an invasive procedure with considerably longer recovery time than with Kybella.

Generally, if you have a double chin or fat pockets below your chin, you may be a candidate for Kybella. Your physician will likely rule out the possibility that your chin fullness is related to a medical condition before giving the OK to proceed with Kybella treatments. Ideal candidates are typically in good health and have good elasticity in the skin around their neck region. They also must be at least 18 years old.

Kybella treatment is permanent. That’s because it contains a naturally occurring molecule called deoxycholic acid. Its job in the body is to aid in digestion by breaking down fat. When injected into the fat beneath your chin, Kybella destroys the fat cells. Once destroyed, the cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so further treatment is not expected once you reach your goal.

The number of treatments varies. The maximum number of treatments is six, but many patients need only two to four treatment sessions. Treatments are given at least one month apart and take about 15 to 20 minutes to administer.

You’ll see results begin to show about one month after the injections begin.

Mild redness, swelling and warmth are common after treatment. They diminish over the first 24 to 48 hours. Minor bruising may also occur and could take about a week to fade. There is no downtime required, so patients can immediately return to their daily routines.
