A woman from Plainfield has notified Waushara County deputies to report a new and frightening telephone scam. In a news release, the department says the woman received a phone call from a phone number based in Mexico. On the other end was a sobbing and screaming woman. Then, the victim told investigators a man with a Mexican accent called her by name saying this was a kidnapping and her mother was involved.
The man demanded money for her release. However, the Waushara County woman realized it was a hoax since her mother died in 1976.
She was shaken and called the Sheriff's Department to report the scam.
Deputies say this is the first report of this type of scam in the area.
