FOND DU LAC (NBC 26) — Two people suffered smoke inhalation after an apartment fire caused by cooking Wednesday night.
Fond du Lac Fire Rescue said it happened at 6 p.m. on 869 Security Drive in the Countryside West Apartments.
Visable smoke was seen coming from a second floor apartment. Fire alarms could be heard as crews got to the scene and people were evacuating. Two people who live in the apartment where the fire started, suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to a local hospital after being treated by FDLFR paramedics.
The fire chief said a grease flare up during normal cooking operations caused the fire. It was put out quickly, but not before causing significant damage to one unit in the 24-unit building.
Alliant Energy and the City’s Chief Building Inspector were on scene to look utilities before gas and power were restored. They were able to safely isolate utilities from the damaged apartment and restored power and gas for the rest of the building so residents could reoccupy their apartments. The apartment complex’s management staff was on scene to assist housing the displaced residents until it was safe for them to return.
