RIPON (NBC 26) -- An Oshkosh driver was arrested for OWI after crashing into Silver Creek, Ripon Police said Monday.

At around 3:30 a.m. Monday, police said a Ripon officer was flagged down by another driver who saw a vehicle leave the roadway at the intersection of West Oshkosh Street and North Union Street and crash into Silver Creek. Officers found a driver and passenger in the vehicle calling for help from the freezing waters. A Ripon officer, along with a Ripon Fire Dept. member, went into the water to help the people get out.

Police said evidence at the scene showed that the vehicle appeared to be speeding and failed to negotiate the curb. It then struck a snow bank, went airborne and ended up in water of Silver Creek.

The driver, a 33-year-old man, and the passenger a 41-year-old woman, both from Oshkosh, were taken to the Ripon Medical Center. Police said the driver was arrested on a change of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant or drug, as well as imprudent speed, and failure to maintain control of vehicle.
