GREEN BAY (NBC 26) -- The death of a 48-year-old Green Bay man who was in police custody is now under investigation.

According to a Green Bay Police news release, officers responded to a local hospital at around 2:40 a.m. Monday for a patient reportedly causing a disturbance. Police said officers tried to mediate the situation to restore the peace, but were unsuccessful.

Officers then arrested the man for disorderly conduct and then took him to Brown County Jail. While at the jail, police said the man experienced a medical emergency. Officers immediately began life saving measures on scene and continued until Green Bay Rescue took over. The man was then taken back to a hospital and was later pronounced dead.

The cause of death is currently unknown, police said. The Green Bay Police Department requested the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation to lead the investigation into the death.
