Day 8 marks halfway point for 2020 sturgeon spearing season; latest numbers

LAKE WINNEBAGO (NBC 26) - Day eight marks the halfway point in the 2020 sturgeon spearing season for Lake Winnebago.

The Wisconsin DNR says 40 fish were harvested Saturday in the Winnebago system, bringing the total for the season to 219 sturgeon. The largest fish of the day was 116.6 pounds and 77.9 inches registered at Jerry's Bar by Brian Koplitz.

Koplitz's catch was one of two fish weighing over 100 pounds for the day. The other was from Renee Reszel registering at 105.4 pounds and 73.7 inches. This was her first catch.

The Upriver Lakes registered 38 more fish bringing their season total to 234 sturgeon. The largest fish they registered was 77.7 pounds and 64.7 inches at Critter's by Fuller Braun.

The Wisconsin DNR says they believe the Upriver Lakes season will go the full 16 days, making this only the second time since the limited entry format was implemented in 2007.
