Johnson changes mind on RNC, Feingold responds

U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson says he will speak at the Republican National Convention after all.

Johnson had indicated last week that he planned to skip the Cleveland convention.

Johnson spokesman Brian Reisinger says fellow Wisconsinite and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus asked Johnson to speak. Johnson chairs the Senate Homeland Security Committee and Reisinger says he accepted the invitation because of growing concerns about international terrorism.

Democratic challenger Russ Feingold's spokesman Michael Tyler criticized Johnson for going to the convention. Tyler says Johnson "couldn't resist rubbing shoulders with his corporate supporters, Washington insiders, and Donald Trump."

Feingold further addressed it himself during a stop at NBC26 Monday morning.

“That’s not the way to campaign in Wisconsin. People in Wisconsin want to know first that you’re listening to them, and frankly, this convention is not about the unity of the American people, it’s about the opposite.”

He says he will “not be switching his mind,” about attending the Democratic National Convention next week in Philadelphia. “I am staying in Wisconsin next week, I’ll be very proud of our candidates but I’m going to listen to the people of Wisconsin.”

An updated convention program released Sunday has Johnson scheduled to speak Tuesday. He expects to spend the rest of the week traveling in Wisconsin, attending grassroots events and doing voter outreach.
