The Green Bay Police Department added a new tool Tuesday to enhance its Bike Patrol.
The department bought state-of-the-art "E-Bikes," which are electrical assisted mountain bikes. They work and function like a normal bike, but have an electrical motor attached that can be engaged as well.
"These Cannondale Moterra’s we believe will allow our officers to continue engaging our community at a much higher level than they could on regular mountain bikes, allowing them to cover a much larger area, more neighborhoods, and more parks then previously possible," the department said in a press release.
The electrical motor can help officers respond quickly to situations that may happen further away without becoming exhausted, the department explained.
The purchase relied heavily on donations from community supporters, grants and private donations, police said. No tax dollars were spent on the bikes.
The department's goal is to continue fundraising until the entire Community Police Unit has these E-Bikes.
