G.B. Water Utility:only 4% of customers have lead pipes

Posted

Green Bay Water Utility says only 4% of their customers have lead pipe systems in their homes.

In a media release Monday the agency said approximately 1,400 lead service lines remain in Green Bay. They say lead levels have historically been below the Environmental Protection Agency action limits of 15 parts per billion.

According to internal tracking, Green Bay's source water, water mains, and finished drinking water are free of the harmful substance.

The plan to have all known utility-owned lead service lines removed and replaced by 2021.

They recommend the following steps to protect yourself from lead in water:

1. Run your water to flush out lead.

2. Use cold water for cooking and preparing baby formula.

3. Do not boil water to remove lead. Boiling water will not reduce it from your water.

4. Identify and replace plumbing fixtures with lead.

4. Have your water tested for lead.

5. Get your child's blood tested.
