U.S. veterans commit suicide at an alarmingly high rate, more than a dozen a day. After working with veterans in Wisconsin, one woman started an organization trying to help.
Heidi Sigmund is the founder of Cover Me Veterans, which encourages veterans to put a meaningful picture on their firearm in order to prevent suicide.
On Friday, she teamed up with Green Bay native and veteran J.P. Lane to put on a benefit concert to raise money for the organization. Lane performed with country star Lee Greenwood at the Meyer Theatre.
"Never in my life did I think I would be back here in my hometown being able to perform here," said Lane.
Lane is a veteran and double amputee.
"Obviously being blown up and losing both my legs, that's pretty devastating," Lane explained. "At least you would think it would be."
Instead, it's pushed him to follow his dreams, and on Friday raising money for a cause close to his heart.
"It's an organization that's trying to lower the suicide rate among our military," said Lane.
Sigmund said putting pictures on firearms can help veterans.
"It just keeps prompting them to remember what's important to them," said Sigmund.
