If you’re looking for a bit of magic during these unusual times, look no further than this color-changing mask from Colorado-based artist Stephanie Hook. Hook became a bit of a social media sensation recently when she posted a video to TikTok of her handmade Harry Potter-themed face mask.
When you first look at it, the mask looks like a simple, handmade fabric mask. Nothing special. But once you start breathing into it, the famous Marauder’s Map, as envisioned by the movies based on J.K. Rowling’s novels, begins to appear due to the temperature change. How cool is that?
Here’s the original video of the mask in action, which has gone viral with more than 419,000 likes and over 8,000 comments so far.

Hook, who sells items through her company Colorado Pony Express (CPEX), says that the video shows a prototype mask. She has since posted another video showing the color-changing abilities of the masks in action.
“I try to bring imagination to life in the creation of my products, ensuring that they are not one-dimensional items,” she told Insider. “I like to give the average person the ability to own items that are unique, and bring magic into the real world in hopes to further inspire others to create and be creative.”
She told Insider that she’s making a limited number of these masks available through her website, as they take about 17 hours to make and she’s a one-person operation. So yes, you can buy them. But they’re out of stock until May 29 at 5 p.m. MT, and we’re thinking that, after they restock, they’re not going to be available for very long considering how much demand there is.
The product description for the masks says they come in adult and children’s sizes, but there’s no price listed. The color change happens at about 82 degrees Fahrenheit, so if you live in a warm climate, the fabric may remain on the Marauder’s Map design. The masks are not medical-grade, but they do use a Centers for Disease Control-provided pattern.
Here’s a video of her in the process of making multiple masks at one time, with the fabric all laid out:

In case you’re wondering, Hook is already planning to create masks for other fandoms, and she’s shared a few of these on her TikTok page, too. For example, check out this Alice in Wonderland prototype:

Believe it or not, Hook isn’t the only one making color-changing face masks. In fact, if you can’t wait until May 29, you can order a different color-changing Marauder’s Map mask on Etsy for $20, from the store The Witches Stitch Co.
There are a few other options available through Etsy as well. You can find color-changing masks for other fandoms (like Disney) as well as ones that just go from one color to another or from black and white to color when heat hits them. There’s a Monsters, Inc. one that has color-changing thread, too.
We love how creative people are getting with this oh-so-new fashion accessory. You can get Golden Girls ones, Disney-themed ones and masks made by your favorite big brands, such as Old Navy. What will they think of next? We can’t wait to find out.
