Apple TV’s New ‘Fraggle Rock’ Is The Reboot We Need Right Now

You may not know this about me, but I’m obsessed with “Fraggle Rock.” I own the 30th-anniversary collector’s edition of the television series on DVD, have the three-disc soundtrack sitting in my car and periodically break out into renditions of Mokey’s “Why” song.

So when I heard that Apple’s streaming video service, Apple TV Plus, was releasing a reboot of the series, I was ecstatic. Not for my 5-year-old child, mind you. For me.

I mean, can you even listen to the opening theme song without dancing? Or is that just me?

Apple TV Plus released the first episode of the new short form series, “Fraggle Rock: Rock On!,” for free on April 21. Episodes are slated to be 3-to-5 minutes long, with new episodes releasing free every Tuesday, according to Variety.

The new show includes all of our old favorite Fraggles: Gobo, Red, Boober, Mokey, Wembley and even Uncle Traveling Matt!

The Goobers, of course, are also still tromping about Fraggle Rock, building their buildings and dreaming up new inventions. Together, the usual crew will use storytelling, music and play to drive home the lesson that “we are all connected through friendship.”

In addition to our favorite puppet-creatures and new songs, there will also be guest stars. The suspense is killing me. (I’m not being flippant. Back when we still watched “Ask the Storybots” with our daughter, my husband and I lived for those celebrity guest spots.)

These new “Fraggle Rock: Rock On!” episodes were produced by The Jim Henson Company and, according to their press page, were shot in accordance with current social distancing guidelines by using iPhone 11s in the homes of various members of the production team and individual artists across the U.S.

You can see a screenshot of the first new episode below to get an idea of what it looks like. It features the characters singing a new version of the classic song, “Shine On, Shine On Me.”

The original “Fraggle Rock” ran for four seasons and nearly 100 episodes between 1983 and 1987 and I have loved the show — and its cast of characters — ever since. Frankly, I cannot handle the excitement of this reboot. But I’ll try.

You can stream the new episodes through the Apple TV Plus app.
