We all know by now that an unusually warm winter has hampered our winter weather activities across the state. One of the hardest hit recreational activities has been the ice fishing. Ice conditions have been unsafe through much of the winter, especially in the bay of Green Bay, Fox River, and Lake Winnebago. And this week is certainly no different.
We are just wrapping up a stretch of weather with temperatures above freezing 12 of the last 13 days!!!!! This has created some of the most dangerous conditions of the season, which we saw yesterday in Green Bay when a group of people had to be rescued after the ice they were fishing on broke away and started drifting into open water. The biggest shock to me was how the people who needed to be rescued where "surprised" how this happened. The DNR has been warning people all winter about the unsafe ice and this week is no different.
Every single body of water is different and even with the warm weather, some of your favorite fishing spots do have safe ice to be on. But I always suggest weighing on the side of caution and check with the experts first. If you go by just the calendar, this is the dead of winter and it's supposed to be the safest time of year to be on the ice. Again..this is not the case.
Fishing and ice experts are all saying that most of ice on Lake Winnebago and the bay of Green Bay is currently unsafe.

The good news......
We are in for some colder weather starting today and into the weekend. I advise to just give it a few days before venturing back out onto the ice. With the consistently cold forecast, conditions should dramatically improve by this weekend....perfect timing for start of Sturgeon Spearing Season.
Be safe,
