Pregame story

This wasn't supposed to be as big of a game as expected. Then again, neither were the Green Bay Packers expected to be 4-3.

Today, the Packers - if they are upset by the Indianapolis Colts - become an average team. That's if you believe the old adage that you are what your record says you are.

If they find a way to win, against a team they should beat, they will rise to 5-3 and return to the grouping of teams in the NFC that are true contenders for a berth in the Super Bowl - particularly in what is now a wide-open NFC North.

This will be a contest where the heavily-injured Packers will again have to lean on the short, control-the-clock passing of Aaron Rodgers - the kind of offense that has become a mid-season adjustment by Mike McCarthy's staff, one which has garnered 51 points in their last 90 minutes of football.

The problem: the defense. The secondary continues to be the issue - not performance per se, but health. Green Bay hopes for the possible return of Quentin Rollins to the decimated cornerback position.

They will face quarterback Andrew Luck, receiver T.Y. Hilton and the other Colts receivers. If their offensive line holds up, that is. With a healthy Clay Matthews to deal with, the patchwork Colts offensive line may not give Luck the time he needs.

If Green Bay does its job, the Packers will be back in the win column, and the column of teams truly in Super Bowl contention halfway through their season.

Stay tuned.
