Ritchie Wins Across the Globe
After helping lead Green Bay to 4 NCAA tournament wins in her time as a Phoenix, Adrian Ritchie put on a different jersey this summer.
"To wear something that says 'USA' across your shirt that you were given, you know, you didn't buy it at Dicks [Sporting Goods] or buy it online or something like that, that meant a lot," Ritchie said. "To be given that trust to represent your country was an incredible experience."
An experience yielding a Four Nations Championship after defeating Australian, Brazilian and Chinese national teams in China.
"When you're in a different country, on a different court, with a different ball, different rules, all of a sudden you're tested as an athlete." she said. "To see what's inside of you to gut it out."
A slight difference from the friendly atmosphere of home.
"You're not at the Kress Center anymore," Ritchie laughed. "You don't have fans that are familiar with you, so it was a matter of overcoming those obstacles. But when we did it, it felt great."
The difference in international play didn't present a problem for Ritchie, whose skills were honed by her former head coach. They came in handy when she filled in at point guard for a struggling Team USA offense.
"Coach Borseth said he wanted to teach us how to play basketball, not just run sets. You know, 'X marks the spot and you have to go here every time and be a certain position'."
Ritchie hopes her ability to adapt leads to a spot on a professional basketball roster.
