Two men were charged in Calumet County court Tuesday for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in Appleton over the weekend.

Sergio David Lara, 22, and Junior Alexander Zavala-Lara, 25, both of Appleton, were charged with second degree sexual assault. The two are accused of raping a woman at the apartment of a mutual acquaintance on the 2200 block of S. Oneida Street.

Police were called to an Appleton hospital early Sunday morning for a woman reporting a sexual assault.

The victim told officers she was at a birthday party and left with a friend and her boyfriend to go to the boyfriend's apartment, according to court documents.

Zavala-Lara and Lara were both at the apartment already and eventually everyone started drinking, the criminal complaint said.

The victim told police Zavala-Lara and Lara sexually assaulted her at different times in the same room, the complaint said. She told police she told them both "no," but they were stronger than her and she was intoxicated.

After the alleged assaults, the victim's friend knew something was wrong and helped her get in contact with her mother, the complaint said.

Her mom then picked her up and brought her to the hospital, according to court documents.

Police observed the victim had a swollen lip, bruising on her neck and appeared to be in pain when they spoke with her at the hospital, court document said.

She was also extremely upset and had to stop the interview to compose herself, according to officers.

The two men were arrested after a traffic stop overnight from Saturday into Sunday. Both men admitted to having sex with the victim, but one of them told officers the sex was consensual.

A $100,000 cash bond was set for each man. They can't have any contact with the victim or the witnesses in the case and must maintain absolute sobriety.
