Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson has announced his intention to run for Congress. The 8th Congressional District seat will be available after Representative Reid Ribble (R) decided not to run for a fourth term.

Nelson was previously elected to the State Assembly in 2004; later elected as Outagamie County Executive in 2011.

You may remember that while in office Nelson helped to form educational partnerships in Outagamie County and also a number of infrastructure investments including recycling and landfill construction.

Nelson is the first democrat to announce his candidacy for the seat. Former State Representative Penny Bernard Schaber said earlier this year she was considering running.

On the Republican side, Mike Gallagher, Terry McNulty and State Sen. Frank Lasee have announced their candidacies.

The Federal Elections Commission website also lists independent Wendy Gribben as a candidate.
