AAA predicts about 1 million Wisconsinites will travel 50 miles or more this Thanksgiving, up almost 3 ½ percent from last year.

The auto club group also said gas prices should be at their highest level since 2014, but that didn’t stop travelers.

Motorist were at the gas pumps Wednesday morning. Some said they were staying home with family, while others said they were traveling within the state.

Ellen Haworth from Green Bay was traveling to Wauwatosa to see her children. She filled up her tank for about $33, which she said was average.

"Gas prices are down a little bit from last week, so it’s always helpful even if it is just a few cents," she said.

Ray Pataconi, of Ashwaubenon, said he would be traveling to Manitowoc for Thanksgiving and planned to leave Thursday morning to avoid traffic.

"I think the prices are decent for this time of year, compared to what they used to be so that will help too, with holiday travel," he said.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation reminds drivers to plan ahead.
They said rear end collisions are the most common types of crashes and 80 percent are caused by distracted driving.
