Mishicot Police and the Manitowoc County Sheriff's Office were on a different kind of search than usual on Monday after a 4 foot long ball python escaped from a Mishicot apartment.

The owners of the python told police that it attacked their small poodle around 2 a.m. They separated the animals and threw the python off their balcony, police said.

The dog is okay, but missing part of one ear, according to police.

"We are working with Wisconsin wildlife to set a trap to catch the snake," said Officer Jacob Schweigl with the Mishicot Police Department.

Neighbors told NBC26 that they're concerned someone was keeping a python as a pet.

"I don't like snakes, it freaks me out a little bit," said Sallie Zuege, who lives in another building in the apartment complex. "My screen door is closed and it won't be open for quite awhile."

Residents said the apartments allow cats and dogs, but they were unsure about other pets.

Ball pythons are not venomous, but authorities say if you see the snake, do not try to catch it yourself. Call the Mishicot Police or the Manitowoc Sheriff's Office if you have any information on the snake's whereabouts.
