One dead, two hurt in seaplane accident near EAA AirVenture

A sea plane trying to take off from Lake Winnebego Thursday night, flipped over before trying to take off. A 71 year old Minnesota woman Diane Linker of Sauk Rapids, died from injuries on Friday.

 

“One of the passengers got out right away, two others were trapped underneath, they were rescued by e-a-c personnel along with "Winnebego County Sheriffs Dept. Coast guard auxiliary, all three were transported to hospitals,” said Dick Knapinski, an EAA Spokesperson.

 

One person died Friday from injuries, the three were from Minnesota, going back home.

 

 “Anything involving a plane is always going to be a little chaotic... This time of year with all of the events, with all the planes, there’s always much more people in the area, so we have contingency plans in place to deal with those types of things, different first responder,” said Lara Vendola-Messer, patrol captain for Winnebego County Sheriff’s Dept.

 

EAA officials say it's going to take about nine to twelve months, for them to find the cause of the accident.

 

“Some of the things they'll be looking at what were the conditions in the sky, the winds, the size of the waves, which directions the pilots taking off, because typically, pilots will take off into the wind to get much lift under the wing as possible,” said Knapinski.

 

The sheriff’s department saying tonight the water.. was in fact choppy.. which could've been a factor to the accident.

 

The victims have not yet been identified.
