Appleton Police have added a new, adorable volunteer to the department!

Blue, a 12-week-old Golden Doodle, is training to become a therapy dog. Right now, he has a rookie status with the department, and is going through training and certification like all officers.

Following his training in the Fox Valley Humane Society Therapy Dog Program, Blue will be on-duty as the only known "station dog" in Wisconsin.

Blue will serve a unique purpose; his main job is to improve the wellness of Appleton Police Department personnel.

Blue is expected to roam the department in search of treats or a nap in the many dog beds that are sure to appear around the building, the police department said.

He will occasionally be used as a therapy dog in the community by comforting victims, helping grieving children, assisting those with emotional or mental health conditions and visiting schools and other community events.

Blue should be on-duty early next spring.
