Special Teams Key for Packers
The 'Gadget Plays' the Packers have run this year on Special Teams has led to 14 points. While they are flashy on the field, they are grounded in hard work throughout the week.
"So far we've run two plays and they've been executed properly," said Special Teams Coordinator Shawn Slocum. "What we do on special teams is no different than offense or defense and it's all about execution."
"They've been working, that's the key. I don't think we want to overdue it," said Kicker Mason Crosby.
"You're just looking for the right opportunity to call them," added Head Coach Mike McCarthy.
One of the beneficiaries of those fakes, Fullback John Kuhn, is as big a fan of the trick plays as he is hitting a linebacker.
"It's exciting to have a coach that trusts us like that and we know when he calls those plays he's trying to put a spark in us. He might see we're down, he might see we're a little flat and a lot of time those calls come to pick up the energy and the intensity and I think they work."
McCarthy says his special teams unit has been the most consistent at the quarter poll of the season. Something that has not been a given in years past.
"There's an emphasis there we haven't had from the players before, frankly. Before it was pulling teeth with some individuals to perform at a high level on special teams."
