GREEN BAY-- Medicare is in the spotlight once again after a video of U.S. Senate Republican candidate Tommy Thompson surfaces. In the video Thompson says he will end Medicare and Medicaid. In the video, Thompson can be heard sayng: "and who better than me that's already finished one of the entitlement programs to come up with programs to do away with medicaid and medicare."

But Thompson says the short video doesn't tell the whole story. "If you listen to the whole thing I said we got to stop Medicare from going bankrupt," Thompson explains. "And I am here to come up with a plan to re-organize it and to refurbish it and make it continue...I'm saying stop Medicare from going broke."

Thompson's Democratic party opponent in the U.S. Senate race, Tammy Baldwin was asked about the recording on MSNBC's Harball. "He left Wisconsin and went and joined the Bush administration in his service there he gave the drug companies a sweetheart deal with the Medicare Part D program, he said, he made it illegal for Medicare to bargain with the drug companies in order to get a better prices for seniors."

Both candidates know Medicare is one of the hot button issues going into the November election.
