Nicole Vanderheyden was beaten, strangled and left for dead in May.

Initially investigators struggled to find the killer.

"Numerous pieces of evidence are being shipped to crime labs that take time and coordination and then we have to wait for results from the crime lab as well," explained Captain David Poteat of the Brown County Sheriff's Department back in May.

Initially deputies believed Vanderheyden's boyfriend was the killer, but one month later there wasn't enough evidence to convict him.  The charges were dropped and he was able to walk out of jail a free man.
Just a short while later Brown County Deputies said they linked the murder to George Burch.

"We are now able to place Mr. Burch on South Broadway when and where Nicole was last seen.  We are also able to place Mr. Burch at the location of the homicide, the location where Nicole's body  was found and the location where additional evidence was recovered," said Captain Poteat last summer.

Burch was caught after Green Bay Police arrested him for a hit and run in early June, just two weeks after Vanderheyden's death.

Officers looked into his phone history and used GPS which they say showed Burch was in the area of Vanderheyden's home at the time of her murder.  They say they also matched his DNA to more than 16 spots at the crime scene.

"The sheriff's office did exactly what they were supposed to do which was continue to investigate all leads," said Brown County district attorney, David Lasee.

Burch is charged with one count of first degree intentional homicide.  His next court date is scheduled for April 7.
