Temporary layoffs have been confirmed at Appleton Coated after the company sent a letter to employees this week.

About 620 employees were impacted, company leaders told NBC26.

Appleton Coated filed for receivership last month to sell company assets or find a buyer. The company makes things like textbooks, labels and other products.

It was auctioned on Tuesday, but the sale is pending.

A spokesman said the layoffs have already started, but a limited number of employees will remain to make sure the company's assets are maintained until the proposed sale is finalized.

The exact length of the layoffs are unknown at this point, and it's not clear if all employees will be brought back, the company said.

In the letter, it said as part of the sale the receiver requested that all potential buyers agree to hire all of Appleton Coated's assets, but none of the qualified bidders could do that.

The whole situation goes to court Friday. Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson has filed a formal objection to the pending sale of Appleton Coated to a company called Industrial Assets, with sites in California and Ohio.
