OSHKOSH, Wis-- A man and his dog were rescued from the south Fox River after his car began to sink.

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday.

"His clothing was actually frozen to him.  He was stiff and he was still alive and screaming, but he had so much ice on him that he was stuck on his back on the ice," said Oshkosh Fire Department public information officer, John Holland.

The caller reported they could hear someone yelling for help from the shoreline.

The Oshkosh Fire Department was also called to the scene. An airboat located a man lying on the ice with frozen clothing. He was taken to a local hospital and treated for exposure and hypothermia.

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office learned the man was driving his vehicle from south to north and when the vehicle entered the mouth of the Fox River, leading to Lake Winnebago it began to sink. The man was able to get out of the vehicle while it was sinking. He was able to pull himself up onto the ice.

The man remains in ICU at this time.  His dog was found Friday afternoon by deputies and returned to its owner after spending a night on the ice.
