Village Leaders Respond To Consolidation Plan
GREEN BAY-- Mayor Jim Schmitt announces ambitious plans in his state of the city address to unify Green Bay -- and combine some local governments into one.
Mayor Schmitt would like to see the city limits expand in the next 12 years to include several Green Bay zip codes that are separate villages like Howard, Allouez, Ashwaubenon and Bellevue.
But it's an idea village leaders say will be a tough sell. Village President Mike Aubinger says the village has a lower tax rate than Green Bay and consolidation would not benefit Ashwauebnon.
Ultimately, voters in green bay and any of the affected villages would decide on a merger. Mayor Schmitt hopes to have the consolidation happen by 2025.
