Hundreds of Cheese Makers Hit Green Bay
More Than 1,700 Cheeses Judged
(Green Bay)- Bruce Workman is just a little nervous, as he watched intently as judges prepared to taste one of his cheeses at the biennial United States Championship Cheese Contest.
"Ya know, if you win, it's really great and if you lose, it's humbling", Workman said.
Workman is a master cheese maker with Edelweiss Creamery and was just of dozens of cheese makers hoping to leave the competition a winner.
Judge, Tim Czmowski was in charge of 1,704 cheeses from all over the United States. "It's a big deal, this is the championship. We're here in title town and obviously this is the Superbowl of cheese making," Czmowski said.
But, while in the judging area, it's all white coats, clip boards and nerves, on the other side of the ropes, it was all fun and games.
"We never realized there was that many kinds of cheese, and we're from cheese country," spectator Dick Huxford said.
The event is free to the public except for Wednesday from 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm when the price goes up to $25 for a special tasting event that benefits Paul's Pantry. For tickets just log onto www.paulspantry.org.
