OSHKOSH - A construction project to fix flooding problems in Oshkosh began on Monday.
A new storage tank is being built underneath City Hall to help relieve flooding issues in the Division Street watershed. But some homeowners are worried it won't make a difference in the areas where they need help.
Ken Dexter has lived in Oshkosh for two years, and has already dealt with his fair share of flooding. Last May, heavy rains flooded much of his neighborhood.
"All of our backyards were under water.. and the water came almost up to the house," recalled Dexter.
Workers at City Hall are well aware that flooding is a problem in Oshkosh. That's why they're investing 3.9 million dollars in the stormwater project.
"It's going to take water from about 100 acre watershed upstream of here -- starting around New York Avenue, between Main and Jackson," said Civil Engineering Supervisor James Rabe.
When the project is completed this November, Rabe says businesses in the downtown area should notice a difference.
"The businesses in that area are going to see a definite decrease in the amount of flooding that takes place during those heavy events," he said.
Meanwhile, homeowners like Dexter say they hope the project is a sign that their flooding problems will soon be solved.
