Beer Bottles Need More Funding
MANITOWOC -- Funding to preserve the iconic Manitowoc Budweiser beer silos is coming up short.
On Monday night, the City Council approved paying Balestrieri, a Milwaukee industrial services company, $25,000 to not remove the painted Anheuser-Busch beer cans. The company already removed the overlying vinyl banners.
Riverland Ag, the new owner of the malting plant, had been directed by the city to remove the vinyl banners and underlying paints cans and bottles.
After more than a thousan emails bombarded Mayor Justin Nickels' office in opposition, he said he would pay to halt the work.
Now that the painted murals have been preserved, the city is asking the community to step up and help foot the bill. That includes the over 1,300 people that signed the online petition against taking down the mural.
However, as of Monday, only Larry's Distributing, which does business with Anheuser-Busch, has made a donation.
The city is also encouraging the community to do fundraising to help pay the bill.
