Gov. Walker Set To Release Budget Details
After slashing the state's budget two years ago with what Gov. Scott Walker called his Budget Repair Bill, he is ready to move forward with his next 2 year budget.
Tom Sladek with the Brown County Taxpayers Association is keeping a close eye on spending.
"This year he goes into the budget with a modest surplus being projected so I don't think we're going to see anything nearly as contentious,” Sladek said.
Meanwhile, groups continue to rally for expansion of the state's Medicaid program, an idea the governor rejected.
Both Republicans and Democrats say expanding private school vouchers could be one sticking point.
"I do want to make sure that the public schools are taken care of in this budget as well as giving people the opportunity to have some choice where schools are doing the best job for their children,” said Rep. Jim Steineke (R) Kaukauna.
Rep. Eric Genrich (D) Green Bay is skeptical of the plan.
"I 'm really not comfortable with his failure to invest in public education and at the same time devote more resources to these privately run unaccountable voucher schools,” Rep. Genrich said.
Republicans are hopeful the governor will continue to help grow the state's surplus, while some Democrats worry about further cuts.
