The U.S. Coast Guard is conducting a two-week long field exercise to save lives on the bay of Green Bay.
Teams are practicing new search patterns to determine their effectiveness. Twenty mannequins are strategically placed across the bay simulating a person in trouble. Coast guard members are gathering information based on the conditions and the distance at which they spot the mannequins. The data collected from the study will help decrease search times.
"It's important to do an exercise like this, because it gives us a general idea of what we're looking for when we go out on the ice," said Jennifer Pender of the U.S. Coast Guard.
The crews will be out there another week and ask that people don't touch the mannequins.
