DE PERE - Catholics and Protestants around the world and in Northeast Wisconsin are marking Ash Wednesday.

At Saint Norbert College in De Pere, students and faculty received their ashes during a special mass. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a season of penance and reflection before Easter.

"It's really a time to look inward and to say, 'What can I do to be a better person?' It's not, 'What can I give up?' It's, 'What can I do more of?'" said Jim Stamatakos with St. Norbert.

Ash Wednesday is always observed exactly 46 days before Easter.
