The History of the Sturgeon
Sturgeon spearing is more than 80 years old and sturgeon have been a part of our lakes for more than 150 million years. These fish date back to the age of the dinosaurs, yet people still celebrate them.
In Oshkosh sturgeon spearing and Jerry's Bar go hand in hand. Spearers come from all over just to take their chances and getting a sturgeon, but mostly it's for the company.
Winnebago sturgeon biologist Ryan Koenigs says, "There are certain groups of people that only see each other one time a year and that's opening week of sturgeon spearing so the culture behind sturgeon spearing is really significant."
Not only is the culture of the 16 day spearing season important but sturgeon spearing also brings in more than 300-million dollars each year.
