STOCKBRIDGE-- Spearers harvested 179 sturgeons on the first day of the 2013 season. Most of those (140) came form the upper rivers lake. 39 were taken from Lake Winnebago. The Department of Natural Resources says poor water clarity is making for a slow start to the harvest on Lake Winnebago. But it's not enough to keep thousands from setting up a shanty for the 81st spearing season.

13-year-old Mitchell Ecker of Stockbridge caught a fish on his first try. This was the first year 12 and 13 year olds were eligible to buy a license. Ecker snagged a fish measuring 55 inches and weighing 41 pounds.

The DNR expects the season to go all 16 days on Lake Winnebago. But on the upper rivers lakes where water clarity is better, the harvest limit could be reached much sooner.
