Sturgeon Spearing Preparations
STOCKBRIDGE-- It's a drive Scott Broehm, president of the Stockbridge Harbor Fishing Club, has been waiting for. He’s heading out on Lake Winnebago to cut holes in the ice. It’s a reminder the sturgeon spearing season is here.
"There's a heck of an adrenaline rush when the fish comes through the holes, you actually go into shock," Broehm said.
The DNR sold 12,086 licenses for this season. Many are optimistic this will be the year the will spear a record-setting fish.
Opening the ice and getting the shanty in place is enough to get the adrenaline going for Scott’s 22 year old son Travis hopes this is the year for a record breaking fish.
"It's possible , any possible any year, just takes time and patience that's all," Travis said.
Thousands of spearers head to Stockbridge, "The Sturgeon Center of the World" every February for a chance to set up shop and continue a family tradition.
