APPLETON-- Supporters of same-day voter registration are rallying to keep it. The group wants voter registration on Election Day to continue.

But some state republicans are pushing to end the practice, saying it's too easy to cheat the system.

The League of Women's Voters says ending it would keep thousands of people from voting. Appleton Tim Hanna says it would burden the taxpayers to stop same day registration.

"It would drive our costs up and the study from the state says it would drive the state's cost up 5 million dollars, most of that is going to land on municipal budgets," Hanna said.

State Assembly Speaker Rep. Robin Vos supports ending same day voter registration and says he wants voter ID and any other necessary election reform to be in place before the next general election.

Governor Walker originally supported getting rid of the program, but says he'll veto a bill that costs the state more than 5 million dollars over the first two years to end it.
