Retailers Banking On Small Business Saturday
APPLETON-- It’s between Black Friday-- the day known for its long lines for deep discounts-- and Cyber Monday, when holiday shoppers will flood the internet to shop online. Small Business Saturday is when smaller shop owners get the chance to boost the bottom line.
The day after black Friday has been known as Small Business Saturday since 2010.
It’s when small business owners put out the welcome mat for shoppers.
"A lot of customers come in and specifically tell me that's why they're here, is to shop local and to shop small business Saturday,” said Lynn Debenack, owner of In Times Past.
About 70% of small business are offering special discount Saturday.
According to economists about 40% of every dollar spent at local independently owned store stays in the local economy.
Joseph’s Shoes is a family owned store, operating in Appleton since 1982.
"We have real loyal customers and we're just blessed with the whole small business loyalty,” said owner Perry Vanderloop.
The big box chains and malls are projected to rake in more than $586 billion on Black Friday weekend, but some shoppers are making an effort to spend their money away from the hustle and bustle of the malls.
It’s an effort smaller retailers say is catching on, and paying off. According to American Express more than 100 million people shopped small businesses on that day last year.
