SUAMICO-- Brown County authorities seized nearly $400,000 from a Sumaico man’s home. It’s the biggest drug-related cash seizure ever in Brown County and police say it’s related to the sale of synthetic marijuana.
Shop owner Michael Denis faces two felony charges for selling the drug out of Imports Plus, his Green Bay smoke shop. Undercover drug task force officers bought the banned substance known as spice or “K-2” from Imports Plus in September.
When police raided the store owner's Suamico home they discovered there was much more to the story. Brown County Drug Task Force Lt. David Poteat says it's a record setting bust. "We are pretty sure that at least a third of that is from synthetic canaboids, based on the records we've looked at to this point, clearly is a profitable business,” Lt. Poteat said.
"Chad Brinker "It was always like a one two stop for a lot of people here and there and yeah I have noticed there aren't the same amount of people coming in,” Brinker said.
The money was converted into cashier’s checks made out to the U.S. Marshal's Service.
"If it is ultimately forfeited the government will take 20 percent of the top, the remainder of the money will be recouped by the local agencies that were involved,” Poteat said.
That money can be used toward equipment, training and overtime pay for the Drug Task Force and Green Bay Police.
Denis is in the Brown County jail, being held on $50,000 cash bond.
