DNR Warns Hunters about Marijuana Growers
GREEN BAY, WI -- The gun, deer season kicks off on Saturday, with a warning from the DNR.
They’re warning about stumbling upon marijuana growers during the hunting season. This has been a fairly common event, with authorities making nearly a dozen pot busts on public lands, many of them tipped off by fisherman and hunters.
As this hunt begins, the DNR wants all eyes looking for more than just a deer.
“If you see tents, or camps, or anything of that nature, or buckets, irrigation materials, those types of things,” said Randy Stark, the Chief Warden for the DNR.
The areas are usually hidden and aren't seen by the public.
“I guess it is something to keep an eye out for,” said Tony Szucs, a hunter.
Hunters like Casey Lemhouse said he takes precautions for his spot in the Nicolet Forest.
“We've already been through there and I guess I wouldn't know what it would look like if I stumbled upon one, but I bet I could imagine,” said Lemhouse.
He says walk through the area, days before you hunt.
“Most people should do [that] before they just go traipsing through the woods,” said Lemhouse.
And for him, safety is in numbers.
“It's one thing to stumble upon it just by yourself if you’re fishing with some people,” he said.
Other hunters say they're not too concerned, but there is always a danger.
“You never know who it is watching the place,” said Szucs.
The DNR said if you see any type of unusual activity, turn around and leave immediately and call authorities.
“It’s very important for the public, being our eyes and ears, to know what to look for,” said Stark with the DNR.
