GREEN BAY-- Halloween is scaring up big business in northeast Wisconsin, as local retailers are cashing in and getting a share of an industry projected to top $8 billion nationwide.
According to the National Retail Federation, 7 out of 10 Americans are celebrating Halloween, up from last year. On average, we'll spend about $80 dollars on costumes, candy and pumpkins. Spending is up about $5 per person from last year.
Stores like Halloween Express on Oneida in Green Bay open in late August, ringing up thousands in sales through October.
"Now that it's really starting to feel like fall and especially today, sales are really starting to pick up and we see that increasing all the way through," said Halloween Express owner Todd Cloutier.
Costumes make up the bulk of the holiday sales numbers.
Chrissy Loch at Goodwill in Green Bay says anything Halloween related is a hot seller right now.
"This is right now our busiest section we're constantly having to come through here, constantly putting out the donated Halloween costumes," Loch said.
No matter where the costumes come from, it’s a big economic boost, and something the whole family can celebrate.
Most Halloween stores will have extended hours the next few weekends. Retailers say the busiest buying time is the weekend before Halloween.
